REAL GUYS, REAL AMBITION

In this series, we sat down with real guys who are changing what work looks like today - from the jobs they do to the places they call their office. This is what the modern hustle looks like.

In Focus with Andrew Paynter

Andrew Paynter isn't your typical photographer. Yes, he can create beautiful images for high profile clients. Sure, he's got a great work ethic. But what makes Andrew unique is his process. He still shoots film and uses analog cameras. He isn't afraid to spend longer lengths of time on a project (sometimes years!) in search of a truer, more lasting image. His personal style is much like his work. Andrew prefers the timeless over trends. Khakis are a daily uniform because they allow him the freedom of movement he craves while cruising on his skateboard, looking for that decisive moment.

ON BEING 'ALWAYS ON' | Andrew Paynter : Photography is creative freedom, every day is different.

Q: How did you get started as a photographer?

A: My grandfather, who took pictures in the British Army during World War 2, gave me my first camera. It took a long time to figure out -- working, working, trial and error, until you're like 'This is what i do. This is what makes me happy.'

Q: Describe a typical workday for you?

A: Starts out with my kids. I always keep a camera on me. Once I get my children to school, if I don't have a specific thing to shoot, it's just creatively wandering. I often go to the lab, to the darkroom, I go to my printers. Every day is different, but they embody all those little things.

Questions & Answers with Andrew Paynter

"The camera is a catalyst to meet people, to talk to people, to learn about people. And I feel like that's best accomplished through the intimacy of a portraiture photographer. It's people I want to be around. I always want to shoot people."

Questions & Answers with Andrew Paynter

Q: What motivates you?

A: I feel like I'm a writer who can't write. These are little things in your life that will stack up and go into a box. And one day, when you're old, these will help tell the story of your life.

Q: Describe your personal style.

A: Coming here, from the East coast, it's more traditional. But I like how California is a little less buttoned up. And to see golden yellow grass and blue sky in California -- it's beautiful. To me, that grass represents khakis. And that blue sky represents a blue shirt. Blue shirt, khaki. Simple.

Q: Why khaki?

A: It's a classic pant. Its easy to wear things with. And I like jeans, but to me, they're much more comfortable than jeans.
